New Luxury Hotel is a Boon for Divers on Curacao’s East Side - By David Espinosa
The luxury-hotel market in Curacao grew by one with the recent opening of the exclusive Hyatt Regency Curacao Golf Resort, Spa and Marina on the island’s east side.
The 350-room megahotel sits on 27 acres in Santa Barbara (Niewpoort) and features three ultraluxurious restaurants — including Shor, built right on the water — as well as an 18-hole golf course, decadent spa and state-of-the-art gym for those times when you’re not diving. Of course, you’ll want to dive 24/7 because the Hyatt’s prime location and sparkling marina marks a new era of exploration in the east.
“Ocean Encounters boats have always gone to the east, where no one dives,” says Christian Ambrosi, general manager of Curaçao’s biggest dive operator
and the Hyatt’s in-house dive operation, Ocean Encounters. “Now with the shop at the Hyatt, we’ll be able to visit the existing
sites more quickly and explore areas that are a bit farther, all without breaking 30 minutes’travel time.” Popular sites like Tugboat, Small
Wall and the Corner are now just five minutes from the Hyatt marina (versus 20 minutes “pre-Hyatt”); Barracuda Point, once 25 minutes away, is now
the closest site at less than five minutes;previously inaccessible Hamrak, and everything east to the tip of the island,is now within 40 minutes by boat. It’s
these sites in the east that will make divers drool. “There are no moorings, no shore entry available, hardly a fishing boat,” said Ambrosi. “When people start diving over here with us on a more regular basis, they are going to see what we mean when we say that diving the east is diving heaven.”
